close up baltimore

This was a grant-funded commission – I interviewed and photographed 15 stories to provide insight into the lives of people living in my neighborhood in Baltimore. May – September 2016.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Close Up Baltimore presents an authentic narrative of the city; one that often goes untold in the national media. Experience a fuller story and witness a more complete picture of the city we all love - told through the eyes of Baltimoreans that live, strive and struggle here daily.

We have worked to share the stories and photos of diverse, resilient, and interesting Baltimoreans. Each photo comes with a snippet of the subject's story; a story they chose to share with the photographer and one that describes or hints at a joy, revelation, hope or tragedy in their life.

We recognize that the story of the person behind the camera is just as crucial as the story of the person in front of it. We work with talented local photographers to bring you Baltimore, through their eyes.

"My parents got divorced when I was thirteen and I know it was for the best, but maybe in an alternate reality they stayed together and were still in love. I wonder what that would’ve been like a lot."

I told him the night we met, that he was the man I was going to spend the rest of my life with. We’ve been living on 27th Street for 35 years, and we’ve been together for 40. I don’t know what either one of us would do without the other. He’s just the other me, and I’m the other him.

GENE & EDWARD, SPOUSES

Our friendship is more like a soul sisterhood to me. I truly feel deep love for this woman. I once read this novel titled Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, and in the novel the author writes of two girls in ancient China who go through the growing pains of life together. From foot binding to finding a husband, raising their children to even death, they were together for it all. They are 老同 (laotong), or “Old Sames”. After I read that novel, I truly felt like Brynn was my old same.

Someday I’d like to support myself by doing what I love, which is painting. I came to Baltimore to pursue art school, and stayed for the community or artists here. There are so many people making and doing things – I feel constantly inspired and excited about what’s going on around me.
